to read 20 books
I am in the process of trying to change my inertia back to reading books and increased fitness.
I love reading and every year I have one resolution and that is to read 20 books, a target which I haven’t reached in the past three years. I have however easily managed to purchase more than 60 books during that period. Reading books and purchasing books should never be confused; in fact it is rude to suggest that every book purchased has been read.
Every month I spend one Sunday shopping for books; it’s the easiest way for me to begin to change my inertia back to reading. Sometimes I do this online because it’s the only place you can get what you are looking for at a reasonable price but more often that not, I drive out to a nearby family mall and scour the three bargain books stores for anything that captures my interest.
Today you can substitute three hard covers as an alternative way of paying that 10% deposit on a new house or car, books have just become so en vogue and so expensive, that finding bargains has become an essential part of modern living.
I like the sensation of buying books, I feel that it is one of the nobler things that you can do with your disposable income. I read quite eclectically, I will always be reading at least three books at once, unlike many people who need to go one at a time. At the moment I am reading Philip Roth, Chandler (and watching the Thin Man series) and Grumpy Old Men.
The one thing that I never do is buy or read Business books unless they have been authored by Scott Adams, in fact the last business book that I did read was a pocket edition of Das Kapital, which was a great quick read, so I can definitely recommend a bit of Marx and Engels.
Changing my inertia towards reading is definitely a factor of going book shopping whereas increasing my fitness is much cheaper, I just put on my gym gear and wait, and wait and eventually I frustrate myself into going and working out with all of the all pretty young things. But I shall continue reading until that moment of inflection arrives when I shall once again proceed to visit the gym.
